Discover the Enchantment of a Viking Ocean Cruise: A Mediterranean Odyssey
From the moment we stepped aboard our Viking Ocean cruise in Barcelona, we embarked on an adventure of a lifetime, exploring some of Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines while immersing ourselves in its vibrant cultures and rich histories. This is what you can expect on an unforgettable journey through the Mediterranean, from the lively streets of Barcelona to the serene canals of Venice—all experienced during our remarkable 12-day Viking Mediterranean Odyssey cruise.
Sailing into Adventure
We boarded the ship at 11 a.m and immediately set out to familiarize ourselves with the sprawling layout of our Viking Ocean cruise vessel. The ship boasted a plethora of facilities, including numerous restaurants, a luxurious spa, a well-equipped gym, inviting bars, a stunning pool, and captivating entertainment venues. It was clear that this was just the beginning of our exploration.
Barcelona: A Cultural Kick-off
Our first day was spent exploring the vibrant streets of Barcelona. One of the unique aspects of Viking cruises is the complimentary excursions offered at each port of call. Our guided tour took us to the awe-inspiring architectural wonders created by Antoni Gaudí, with the Sagrada Familia taking center stage. Standing before this magnificent basilica, its spires reaching dramatically skyward, we were captivated by its intricate design and the ongoing construction that showcases the ambition behind it. The interior, illuminated by stained glass windows, created a beautiful atmosphere of red and gold that felt almost sacred.
Despite it not being peak tourist season, the crowds were significant and without a tour guide would have been a nightmare to navigate. After our guided experience, we had the rest of the day to wander the city at our leisure taking the opportunity to capture some photos of historical landmarks around the city.
Marseille: A Blend of Old and New
Sailing overnight, we arrived in Marseille’s Old Port, where we watched fishermen unload their daily catch. The bustling market stalls were fascinating to experience as a tradition that no doubt has been happening for hundreds of years..
We made our way to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, perched high on a hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Marseille and the azure sea. Exploring Le Panier, the city’s oldest district, felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets were lined with quirky shops and cozy cafés, where we indulged in a delightful patisserie, savoring buttery croissants alongside steaming coffee.
After our guided tour, we continued exploring Marseille, taking in the stunning views of the city and its coastline.
Monte Carlo: A Taste of Luxury
Next on our itinerary was Monte Carlo, a destination synonymous with luxury. The grandeur of the Casino de Monte-Carlo left us in awe; even though we weren’t there to gamble, the opulent architecture and exquisite interiors were mesmerizing.
A stroll through the Prince’s Palace offered us the chance to witness the Changing of the Guard, followed by a visit to the lush gardens, where we admired the magnificent Mediterranean views. Larvotto Beach is a vibrant scene with locals and tourists and is a much see visit on your travels to Monte Carlo.
Tuscan Delights in Livorno
Our voyage continued as we sailed to Livorno, the gateway to Tuscany. Livorno itself is bustling with seafood markets and charming canals. Our guided trip took us to Pisa, where we stood before the iconic Leaning Tower. The experience of climbing the tower was exhausting but the view from the top was simply spectacular. Nearby, we visited the Cathedral and Baptistery in Piazza dei Miracoli, both showcasing intricate designs that reflect the art and architecture of the time.
While we opted not to take the longer tour to Florence, we heard tales of breathtaking visits to the Uffizi Gallery, which is home to works by renowned artists like Michelangelo and Botticelli.
Rome: A Walk Through History
Once again, we sailed overnight, this time docking in the ancient city of Rome. Our guided tour took us to The Colosseum which is a magnificent relic of history that is so much bigger than what you see in pictures and movies. Nearby, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill was a fascinating glimpse into the story of Rome’s glorious past.
Vatican City was another highlight of our cruise. Here, you will see St. Peter’s Basilica, adorned with a grand dome and stunning mosaics. The Sistine Chapel, featuring Michelangelo’s breathtaking masterpieces is also a must-see. The nearby Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are amazing. At the conclusion of our guided tour we took the opportunity to savor a traditional Italian pizza at one of the numerous outdoor restaurants.
Naples: Flavor and History
Our next port of call was Naples. The historic center featured the Naples Cathedral and the famous Piazza del Plebiscito. The true highlight, however, was indulging in authentic Neapolitan pizza. The thin, crispy crust paired with fresh, flavorful toppings created an unforgettable culinary experience.
The Allure of Corfu
Sailing onward, we arrived at Corfu, a Greek island radiating unique charm. Corfu Town, adorned with Venetian architecture and narrow alleys, was delightful to explore with a lot less tourists than we had experienced in the previous ports.. Wandering through picturesque streets, we soaked in the island’s laid-back atmosphere.
A visit to the Achilleion Palace was another gem on our itinerary. The palace’s gardens, brimming with statues and panoramic views, offered a serene escape before we returned to the ship in the early afternoon, ready for our next adventure to Croatia.
Dubrovnik: The Pearl of the Adriatic
Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” was a fascinating experience. Walking along the city walls provided breathtaking views of the sea and the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town. The 2-kilometer trek around the walls is a must-do, and we recommend an early morning visit to avoid the crowds.
Within the Old Town, the Rector’s Palace and Sponza Palace are must see attractions. The narrow streets were bustling with shops and cafés, and we enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the Stradun, a popular promenade for tourists and locals. A cable car ride to Mount Srd is also worth doing with stunning views of the city at the top.
Split: A Fusion of Ancient and Modern
Our final port before Venice was Split, a city that beautifully melds the ancient and the modern. Diocletian’s Palace is the heart of the city, and wandering through its historical corridors felt like stepping back into time. The Peristyle, a central courtyard, is a World Heritage Site and was once the main reception area for visitors to the palace.
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, boasted an intricate facade and prominent bell tower. At the Riva Promenade, you can enjoy stunning views of the harbor as yachts and ferries come and go. This picturesque spot is lined with cafes and restaurants and a perfect stop to relax and enjoy the scenery and atmosphere.
Back at the heart of Diocletian’s Palace, St. Domnius Square serves as a lively hub and is surrounded by historical buildings and Roman ruins.
Concluding Our Viking Odyssey in Venice
As our Viking Ocean cruise drew to an end in Venice, we boarded a small ferry from Chioggia, as cruise ships can no longer dock directly in the city. Venice is renowned for its enchanting allure and profound history, built on 118 small islands separated by canals and connected by bridges.
The city’s most famous landmark, St. Mark’s Basilica in Piazza San Marco, exemplifies the extraordinary Byzantine architecture, characterized by intricate mosaics and a resplendent golden interior. Nearby stands the majestic Doge’s Palace, a Gothic architectural masterpiece that once served as the residence of the Doge and the seat of governance.
Venice’s extensive canal system, particularly the Grand Canal, is lined with historical buildings that add to the city’s scenic beauty. A traditional gondola ride on the canals is a romantic way to fully immerse yourself in Venice’s charm.
The Rialto Bridge, a vital crosspoint since its completion in 1591, is surrounded by bustling markets, making it a popular destination among visitors. Upon returning to Venice after our cruise, it was fascinating to witness St. Mark’s Square submerged under foot-deep water due to ocean tides, showcasing the city’s vulnerability to flooding.
Today, Venice attracts millions of tourists yearning to explore its historic sites, enjoy its beautiful waterways, and participate in its vibrant cultural festivals. We recommend visiting early in the day or late afternoon and evening to avoid the throng of tourists.
