10 Eye-Opening Reasons Bangkok Might Not Be for You

10 reasons Bangkok might not be for you

Table of Contents

Bangkok is an electric, world-class city—but it’s not everyone’s cup of Thai tea. If you’re on the fence about visiting Bangkok, here are ten honest reasons Bangkok might not be for you. We spent a week in Bangkok and visited all the popular tourist spots, but it was challenging. The heat was relentless and sapped the energy from you after a few hours. The traffic was a nightmare, not to mention the air quality. Accepted that Bangkok is the most popular port of entry for anyone visiting Thailand. If you’re heading to some of the more popular and beautiful islands in Thailand, and you’re on a limited time frame, then we would suggest you spend a minimal time in Bangkok. Use your time to see the much less crowded destinations in Thailand. Remember these reasons Bangkok might not be for you before planning your trip.

10 Reasons Bangkok Might Not Be For You

Bangkok traffic

In addition to gridlocked traffic, there are many reasons Bangkok might not be for you during your visit.

Gridlocked Traffic

Bangkok’s congestion is infamous. A 10-minute ride can balloon to an hour. Tuk-tuks, scooters, taxis—everyone gets stuck. If you hate waiting, brace yourself. The traffic congestion is one of the major reasons why Bangkok might not be for you.

Bangkok BTS

Limited Transit Coverage

The BTS and MRT are efficient but don’t reach everywhere. Unless your hotel hugs a station, expect long, sweaty transfers and pricey rides. We stayed at Lebua State Tower which we highly recommend and is within 300 metres of 2 different subway stations. It seems like a small point, but this really is important as you will likely need to use the trains during your stay. We used them frequently and also to get to the airport, which was a lot more reliable and quicker than a taxi.

Bangkok heat

Relentless Heat and Humidity

Think 30–35°C (86–95°F) paired with sauna-level humidity—day and night. You’ll live by air-con and still feel like you’re walking through soup.

Bangkok crowds

Shoulder-to-Shoulder Crowds

The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Chatuchak Market are gorgeous—and jam-packed. Expect queues, photo battles, and more time navigating bodies than sights.

Tourist Scams

Tourist Scams and Overcharging – Reasons Bangkok Might Not Be For You

From “special” tuk-tuk tours to “gem deals,” scams target newcomers. Constant haggling and suspicion can wear you down, fast. Tuk-tuk drivers are notorious for overcharging foreigners, and in most cases you will find your tuk-tuk ride takes longer than walking because of the traffic.

Bangkok air quality

Patchy Air Quality

Dry-season smog and exhaust can sting eyes and throats, especially if you’ve got allergies or asthma. Masks become more than a fashion accessory.

Bangkok hotels

Language Barriers Beyond Tourist Zones

English works in hotels and malls; less so in local markets. Menus in Thai and miscommunications are common—learn a few phrases or prepare for charades. Google Translate is a handy app to have if you are stuck.

Bangkok street food

Street Food Isn’t for Every Stomach

It’s legendary, but not always gentle. Tiny stools curbside, mystery cuts, and sizzling woks beside traffic can be a shock—especially for sensitive stomachs. Speaking from experience, you do need to choose your street food carefully, We steered clear of the tiny food stalls where meats and other fried delicacies had been sitting for perhaps hours in the hot sun. There are plenty of small restaurants both Thai and international to choose from which, not guaranteed, but appear to have better hygiene control than the small street vendors.

Bangkok nightlife

Nightlife That Can Feel Intense

Bangkok’s neon nights are loud and unapologetic. Red-light districts and aggressive bar scenes can be uncomfortable, particularly for families or low-key travellers. While we experienced some Bangkok nightlife, we opted to stay close to our hotel most nights, where the environment was a lot safer and calmer.

Bangkok Traffic

Sprawl, Confusing Navigation, and Constant Noise: More Reasons Bangkok Might Not Be For You

The city is vast and disorienting; street names change and maps can mislead. Add 24/7 noise, and “relaxing city break” this is not.

Ultimately, while Bangkok can be an exhilarating destination, the reasons Bangkok might not be for you should be considered carefully.

How We Calculate Our Rating

Our score is out of 10 and based on:

Location & convenience – 30%

Room Quality & cleanliness – 30%

Facilities & services – 25%

Dining – 15%

We do not take price (value for money) into our calculations, as rates can differ substantially depending on when you go. If you travel in peak season, then expect to pay the highest rates, but it does not (or should not) change the quality of the hotel. If we give it a rating of 8.0 or higher, we would consider staying again.
TBA – means we have not stayed at this hotel but have booked for a future visit or included in our research as a suggested place to stay
